COLORBLIND
When we were at Mount Rainier National Park this past week, we were alerted to the fact that our first borne may be color-blind. We discovered this after we watched a video in the visitors' center, which highlighted the fact that Native Americans were the first to inhabit this area. It also described the sustained, strong connection local tribes have to Rainier and to the land.
After the video, Nicholas sat with rapt attention as we described the contribution of Native Americans and how they were displaced and marginalized by white settlers. He then said, "Mama, are there still white people around?" We said yes there were, to which he responded, "Who are they?" We tried our best to describe how Kathleen and partly he and Cate are white, to which he responded, "Oh!" We also tried to explain that most white people are very kind, but he had already moved on to other more important matters than race- animals, trains, etc.
When we see the world through the eyes of a (our) child, then we will get to the mountaintop...

AND HE'S OFF!!!
We have been teaching Nicholas how to ride his bike for the past few weeks, and he has made tremendous progress as evidenced below. Nicholas is definitely someone who is goal-oriented, and he responds very well to a clearly spelled-out reward structure. Every time he practices riding his bike, he earns a sticker. When he gets 16 stickers, he gets a new "Thomas the Train" train. He has already received 2 new trains at last count.
Hopefully, by the end of the summer, we will be able to take bike rides around the neighborhood... if we can get him away from the train tracks that are sure to be filled with new trains! Enjoy!

A PICTURE IS WORTH A THOUSAND WORDS
It has been a very rainy and cool winter/spring here. April had the greatest number of days in Portland history with at least some precipitation- 29/30. We also set a record this year for the latest date in the year with a temperature above 80F in Portland- sometime earlier this month. That said, this week has been glorious. It is captured best in this screen shot from my phone, which reminds me why I put up with the 6 months of rain.
That which does not kill me makes me stronger (paler) and more thankful for summer's eventual arrival!
