There is a lot of rancor and racism in our public political discourse these days, which is embodied by the "Tea Party" movement and the Republican Party's embrace of these fringe elements of our society. However, even if the Democrats lose seats in 2010, the future of this country does not belong to these lunatics. It belongs to people who look like me and my relatives.
Last year, for the first time in our nation's history since settlement by Europeans, non-white births exceeded white births in the U.S. These kids' parents have been rejected or marginalized by the "right" and will increasingly become Democrats and liberals, as will their kids. As I walked into the kitchen and gazed upon the artwork on our own refrigerator, I was stuck by a piece by Nicholas shown below.
This picture reminded me that I have done my part to make this Union more perfect by bringing two biracial, colorblind kids into the world. They will likely be parents ones day, and I am certain they will be liberals and leaders.
When I asked Nicholas what the name of his picture was, he replied, "There are two names: Whatever Your Color Is Dr. Martin Luther King and Rainbow Dr. Martin Luther King." The future of America seems very bright... and colorful indeed.
